This stanza from the Nakshatra Sukta describes Abhijit as a star of victory, success and protection — which is why it is treated as highly auspicious in muhurta for beginning significant activities, even when other factors are mixed.
The phrase invokes Abhijit as a victorious, conquering force: abhijit literally means “the victorious one,” and the verb vijitya (“having conquered, having overcome”) reinforces it. The blessing that follows asks that it bestow prosperity (śriyam) even when we are being pressed, challenged or attacked (ahṛṇīyamānam).
Abhijit in the 27-Nakshatra System
Abhijit often creates confusion because the Panchang uses 27 nakshatras, yet classical texts also mention Abhijit as the 28th. The key point is that Abhijit does not replace or modify the standard 27-nakshatra system used for daily panchang, birth charts, or transit calculations. The Panchang consistently uses 27 equal lunar mansions, while Abhijit is treated separately as a special, intercalary nakshatra appearing only in certain Jyotisha and Muhurta traditions. It occupies a small region between Uttarāṣāḍhā and Śravaṇa and is invoked specifically for auspicious timing because of its association with victory and success.
Where Is Abhijit Located?
Abhijit occupies the junction between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana rather than a slot of its own in the standard 27-fold division. Because it straddles that boundary, it cannot be derived by dividing the ecliptic into 27 equal segments of 13°20′ each — it must be defined explicitly by its start and end longitudes. Abhijit overlaps the final 3°20′ of Uttara Ashadha and the opening 53′20″ of Shravana. The two parent nakshatras are unaffected: a moment falling inside the Abhijit window still belongs to Uttara Ashadha or Shravana under the ordinary 27-nakshatra reckoning, and Abhijit is layered on top as an additional classification rather than replacing it.
A caution on sources
Definitions of Abhijit are not uniform across traditional authorities, and calculations published online differ accordingly. A second common formulation takes the last fifteenth of Uttara Ashadha plus the first fifteenth of Shravana — a symmetric interval of only 1°46′40″, running 279°06′40″ to 280°53′20″. Both share the same end point but begin nearly two and a half degrees apart, which is enough to change whether a given muhurta qualifies. Anyone comparing one implementation against another should first establish which definition each uses before concluding either is in error.
Abhijit is also not employed universally: it appears in particular muhurta systems and tables rather than in every election, so its presence or absence in a given almanac is not by itself evidence of a mistake.
How Long Does Abhijit Last?
Under the definition used here, Abhijit spans 4°13′20″ of the sidereal zodiac. Since the Moon travels roughly 13°10′ per day on average, it crosses that arc in approximately 7 to 8 hours. The exact duration varies month to month because the Moon’s speed is not constant: it moves faster near perigee and slower near apogee.

The Moon returns to the same point against the stars once every sidereal month of about 27.3 days, so Abhijit occurs once in that cycle — not daily, and not once per calendar month. The practical consequence surprises most people consulting a panchang: the overwhelming majority of days have no Abhijit Nakshatra period at all. If you check an arbitrary date and find nothing, that is the expected result rather than an omission.
It does not last a whole day
This is worth stating plainly, because the ordinary 27 nakshatras invite the opposite intuition. Each of those spans 13°20′, which the Moon takes roughly 24 hours to cross — so in everyday usage a nakshatra is loosely treated as “the nakshatra of the day,” identified by whichever is active at sunrise. Abhijit does not behave that way. At about a third the width, its window opens and closes partway through a day, frequently straddling midnight, and it is entirely possible for Abhijit to begin in the evening of one date and end in the early hours of the next.
That has two implications when reading or building a panchang. First, a day-level flag is the wrong representation — knowing that “today has Abhijit” tells you little without the start and end times, since the interval may have passed before you consulted the calendar. Second, Abhijit must be intersected with the other timing factors rather than assumed to cover them: a muhurta requires the Abhijit window to overlap a suitable lagna, hora and choghadiya simultaneously, and a seven-hour window does not guarantee such an overlap exists.
When Does Abhijit Occur?
Abhijit is not a date on a calendar. It is an astronomically determined interval whose timing depends on three inputs: the Moon’s sidereal longitude, which fixes the moment the interval opens and closes; the date, which determines where in its 27.3-day circuit the Moon happens to be; and the location and timezone, which govern how that moment is displayed.
That third factor deserves care. The ingress and egress are absolute instants — the Moon crosses 276°40′00″ at one single moment for the entire world. What changes with location is the clock reading assigned to that moment. If Abhijit opens at 15:42 UTC, an observer in New York on Eastern Standard Time sees 10:42 AM and an observer in Bengaluru sees 9:12 PM. Neither is more correct; they are the same event on two clocks.
This is a genuine departure from how most panchang entries behave. A festival date can be attached to a day and, once determined for a location, simply stated. Abhijit has no such day-level answer — it has a start and an end. Any source presenting Abhijit Nakshatra as recurring at the same time each day has confused it with Abhijit Muhurta.
How Is Abhijit Calculated?
The calculation is a boundary search rather than a table lookup. Because Abhijit does not align with the standard 27-fold division, it cannot be derived by dividing the Moon’s longitude by 13°20′ — the interval must be tested explicitly.
- Calculate the Moon’s sidereal longitude. The apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude is obtained from an astronomical ephemeris, then converted from tropical to sidereal by subtracting the ayanamsa. The choice matters: Lahiri and Fagan/Bradley differ by roughly 0.88°, which corresponds to about 96 minutes of lunar motion. Calculations that disagree by an hour and a half are usually disagreeing about ayanamsa, not about the Moon.
- Define the interval. 276°40′00″ ≤ Moon longitude < 280°53′20″.
- Find the ingress. Locate the moment the Moon crosses the lower bound — scanning forward in coarse steps until the longitude falls inside the interval, then narrowing by binary search until the crossing is resolved precisely.
- Find the egress. The same procedure applied to the upper bound.
- Convert to local time. Render both instants in the observer’s timezone, taking care across daylight-saving transitions, where a naive conversion can shift a result by a full hour.
Because Abhijit occurs only once per lunar month, a search that simply looks for “the next Abhijit” may run for weeks of simulated time. Bounding the search to a specific day and returning nothing when the interval does not fall within it is both faster and a more honest representation of the result.
Abhijit Nakshatra vs Abhijit Muhurta
These are not the same thing. They share a name and nothing else — different derivation, different duration, different frequency. This is comfortably the most common misunderstanding surrounding Abhijit, and it arises naturally: many panchangs list Abhijit Muhurta every single day, which readers reasonably take as evidence that Abhijit Nakshatra is also a daily occurrence.

Abhijit Muhurta is derived from the length of the day: the interval between sunrise and sunset is divided into fifteen parts, and the eighth — centred on local solar noon — is Abhijit Muhurta. It therefore exists on essentially every day and shifts with the seasons as day length changes. Abhijit Nakshatra, by contrast, depends on nothing but where the Moon is. It has no relationship to noon, to sunrise, or to the length of the day, and on most dates it does not occur at all.
The practical test: if a panchang shows an “Abhijit” period of roughly three quarters of an hour around midday, that is the muhurta. If it shows a window of seven or eight hours that appears only occasionally, that is the nakshatra.
Why Is Abhijit Considered Auspicious?
The name carries the answer. Abhijit derives from Sanskrit meaning “victorious” or “the one who conquers,” and the traditional reputation of this interval follows from that sense. In muhurta literature it is associated with victory, success in undertakings, and the overcoming of obstacles, which is why it appears in discussions of when to begin ventures whose outcome is uncertain or contested.
Traditional deity associations vary by source and include Brahma and Vishnu, with some texts also invoking Indra in connection with victory. The thematic logic is consistent: preservation, sovereignty and triumph.
A necessary distinction. Everything above is traditional religious and Jyotisha interpretation — the accumulated view of a scriptural and commentarial tradition about the meaning assigned to a portion of the zodiac. It is not an astronomical claim, and nothing about the Moon occupying 276°40′–280°53′20″ sidereal is physically different from it occupying any other arc. This article computes the interval astronomically and reports the tradition’s interpretation of it; those are two separate kinds of statement.
Mythology and Scriptural References
The Vedic attestation
Abhijit appears in the Nakṣatra Sūkta of the Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa (3.1), in the litany that invokes each nakṣatra in turn. Critically, it appears in sequence — nested between Uttarāṣāḍhā and Śravaṇa, exactly where it sits in the sky.
यस्मिन् ब्रह्माभ्यजयत्सर्वमेतत् । अमुं च लोकमिदमू च सर्वम् । तन्नो नक्षत्रमभिजिद्विजित्य । श्रियं दधात्वहृणीयमानम् । उभौ लोकौ ब्रह्मणा संजितेमौ । तन्नो नक्षत्रमभिजिद्विचष्टाम् । तस्मिन्वयं पृतनाः संजयेम । तन्नो देवासो अनु जानन्तु कामम् ॥
“That in which Brahmā conquered all this — yonder world and this whole world — may that nakṣatra Abhijit, having conquered, grant us prosperity, unresenting. Both these worlds were won by Brahmā; may that nakṣatra Abhijit look upon us. In it may we conquer in battles. May the gods approve this desire of ours.”
The name is the argument. Abhijit (अभि + √जि) means “wholly conquering,” and the verse plays on it three times over — abhyajayat, abhijid vijitya, saṁjitau. Brahmā’s conquest of both worlds is bound to this nakṣatra, and the petition that follows is for victory pṛtanāsu — in battles. This is why Abhijit carries its reputation for undertakings that must not fail. The association is not a later astrological convention; it is embedded in the earliest verse we have about it.
The Purāṇic attestation
In the Uddhava Gītā, Kṛṣṇa enumerates the forms in which he is most fully present:
संवत्सरोथस्म्यनिमिषामृतूनां मधुमाधवौ । मासानां मार्गशीर्षोथहं नक्षत्राणां तथाभिजित् ॥
“Among the unblinking ones I am the year; among seasons, Madhu and Mādhava; among months I am Mārgaśīrṣa; and among nakṣatras, Abhijit.” — Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 11.16.27
Note the precision: nakṣatrāṇāṁ tathābhijit — among nakṣatras, Abhijit. This is a distinct claim from the more frequently quoted Bhagavad Gītā 10.21, where Kṛṣṇa says nakṣatrāṇām ahaṁ śaśī, “of stars I am the moon.” The two verses are often run together; they are not the same statement, and only the Bhāgavatam names Abhijit. For a nakṣatra whose independent existence would later be questioned, being singled out as a divine vibhūti is no small thing.
The astronomical squeeze
The difficulty is arithmetic. The ecliptic is 360°. Twenty-seven nakṣatras of 13°20′ each divide it exactly. Twenty-eight do not.
Something had to give, and what gave was Abhijit’s independent extent. Rather than resize all twenty-eight, the tradition kept twenty-seven equal divisions and defined Abhijit as an interval borrowed from its neighbours — precisely the neighbours between which the Brāhmaṇa had placed it.
The muhūrta tradition’s verdict
Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi (Rāma Daivajña, 16th century), with Govinda’s Pīyūṣadhārā commentary, states the resolution plainly. Under the heading athābhijinmānam — “now, the measure of Abhijit” — the commentary defines it as the fourth pāda of Uttarāṣāḍhā joined with the first fifteenth part of Śravaṇa’s bhoga, citing Vasiṣṭha.
The Hindi exposition draws the conclusion without hedging: there is no separate nakṣatra called Abhijit in the way the twenty-seven are. Its measure is simply whatever ghaṭikās those two borrowed spans yield together.
And yet the same text will not quite let it go. In its enumeration of stars per nakṣatra, Abhijit is credited with three, in a list explicitly running “from Aśvinī to Revatī” across twenty-eight. Its visible form is given as triangular — abhijitas trikoṇākāram. It participates in mutual vedha, paired with Rohiṇī. These are not the attributes of a fiction.
But Nārada is quoted giving a chakra that omits it — abhijidvarjitaṁ chakram — and the text lists where it is not counted at all: Abhijit is not reckoned in the Lāṅgūla, Kamaṭha, Phaṇi, Trināḍika or Khārjurika chakras.
What the trajectory shows
Abhijit is named in the Brāhmaṇa, placed in sequence, and given a conquest-etymology that the verse itself elaborates. It is named again in the Bhāgavatam as a form of Kṛṣṇa. It retains stars, a shape, and vedha relationships in the muhūrta literature a millennium and more later.
What it loses is standing. The demand for a clean 360° division left no room for a twenty-eighth equal share, and Abhijit was redefined as an interval on loan from the two nakṣatras that had always flanked it.
The tradition, in other words, did not forget Abhijit. It kept the name, kept the place, kept the auspiciousness — and quietly stopped counting.

Abhijit is one dimension in a multi-factor evaluation. A muhurta engine considers the interval alongside:

Abhijit by itself does not automatically make every activity auspicious. This bears stating plainly because the shorthand “Abhijit = good” circulates widely and is misleading in practice.
A muhurta is an intersection, not a lookup. The Abhijit window may run seven hours while a suitable lagna occupies ninety minutes of it, the hora favours a different portion, and the choghadiya rules out a third — leaving a genuinely favourable interval far shorter than Abhijit itself, or none at all. Conversely a strong muhurta can exist on a date with no Abhijit whatsoever, since the other factors carry independent weight.
The correct reasoning is: does the Abhijit window overlap a period where the remaining factors are also favourable for this specific activity and this specific person? That is a computation, not a classification.
