About This Text

The closing note of the text tells us that the story comes from the Bhaviṣyottara Purāṇa, presented as a dialogue between Pārvatī and Parameśvara (Śiva). This katha is traditionally read or listened to during the Varalakshmi Puja, usually after tying the sacred thread.

Several details of the observance appear in the story itself rather than only in ritual manuals: the timing on the Friday preceding Shravana Purnima (verses 6 and 12), the pots of fresh rice decorated with banyan leaves (verse 19), the sacred thread tied on the right hand (verse 21), and the offering of vayana with twelve cakes to an elderly Brahmin (verse 22).
